From Texas to Taos: My Favorite Southwest Trip

Taos House

No place has ever captured my heart like New Mexico. They call it the 'Land of Enchantment,' and no phrase could be more fitting. I've had New Mexico on my list of places to visit for so long, and for whatever reason, it kept getting pushed back. If you're in the same boat, consider this your sign to book the trip! I want to visit Taos every summer now.

The drive from Texas was long, but so worth it. There are a few route options for getting to Taos from Austin. We travelled on US 183 to US 84, through Lubbock and Clovis.

Taos or Santa Fe?

I'd never been to New Mexico before, so it was tough deciding where to spend the bulk of my time: Santa Fe or Taos. In the end, I spent 4 nights in Taos and 2 nights in Santa Fe. They pair nicely together, but are both very different.

For shopping, fancy restaurants, and museums, Santa Fe is the spot. Taos, on the other hand, is way smaller. I totally fell in love with Taos for its laid-back vibe, perfect for relaxing and exploring with Andrew and our pup.

I can't wait for an upcoming trip to Santa Fe with my girlfriends, which I think is more appropriate for a larger group.

Where Should You Stay in Taos?

When I was looking at places to stay, I was so confused if I should stay in Taos or Taos Ski Valley.

Taos is the main town. It’s known for its Puebloan culture, adobe architecture, and arts scene. It's also the biggest town in the area, so more restaurants are available here.

About 20 miles away, Taos Ski Valley is a popular spot for outdoor activities, especially skiing and snowboarding in the winter. But it's just as beautiful in the summer! If you're into mountain biking, I'm sure this is already on your list.

I didn't end up staying in Taos or Taos Ski Valley, but just outside Taos in El Prado. El Prado is a great spot for those looking to stay close to Taos while enjoying a bit more solitude. El Prado is also close to Arroyo Seco, a small village with a bohemian vibe.

If you do stay in El Prado, check out this place we stayed on VRBO: Rainbow Casita. We loved the views and being a little separated from town. It felt like home. The pictures don't do this charming place justice.

What To Do While in Taos

Hike Williams Lake Trail in Taos Ski Valley

This hike is pretty moderate even though it takes you up 11,040 feet. Throughout the hike, you're surrounded by fragrant pine forests and meadows blanketed with wildflowers, leading to the beautiful Williams Lake. When you reach the lake, its peacefulness overtakes you. The lake truly sparkles among the tall peaks. I wanted to plant my feet in the ground there forever. It was also nice that the lake wasn't overrun with people.

Make sure you set aside some time to enjoy a drink at the Bavarian after your hike.

*There are also TONS of hiking options around Taos. Carson National Forest is huge and there are so many beautiful trails to choose from. If hiking is what you're after, Taos is the place for it.

Explore Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument

Rio Grande Del Norte is a HUGE area with many different experiences to offer. If you're into geology, you should totally take a 30-minute drive from Taos to La Junta Point, where the Red River and the Rio Grande come together in two gorges. You can catch a glimpse from the overlook or hike down to the meeting point.

The monument has more than 240,000 acres of public land, looked after by the Bureau of Land Management. You've got lots of trails to pick from and camping options too. I recommend visiting the Wild Rivers Visitor Center to learn a little more (and get some cool t-shirts and stickers).

Get Breakfast at Farmhouse Cafe

https://www.farmhousetaos.com/ After a long drive that took all day, it was so nice to wake up in Taos and start my day at the Farmhouse Cafe. There was a line when we arrived, so be sure to get there early. We loved sitting outside with the cool breeze surrounding us. The atmosphere here is so peaceful. I ordered a raspberry scone and the quiche of the day. It was super fresh and delicious. Definitely grab breakfast here!

That's me below! Sleepy, but about to eat my favorite scone.

Go Mountain Biking

One of the main reasons we visited Taos was for the mountain biking. There are countless trails around the area, and you can even head to Taos Ski Valley, take the lift up, and ride down the slopes.

Being the risk-averse person I am, I skipped the lift but found plenty of trails in Taos that were easy but still gave me enough of a challenge.

Andrew and I biked around the Rio Grande del Norte Rift Valley, parking at the trailhead and discovering plenty of fun zigzags to explore for hours. It was so fun and mountain biking through the rift almost made me feel like a true outdoor adventurer.

Also, if you don't have a bike, you can rent one very easily at Taos Ski Valley or from Rift Cycles in Taos.

Enjoy Dinner and Drinks at Medley

https://www.medleytaos.com/ I always enjoy treating myself to a fancy meal when I travel. Medley is the spot in Taos for quality ingredients, innovative dishes, and great drinks. If you manage to snag a seat on their outdoor patio, you'll want to relax and enjoy the mountain views for hours. And don't forget to stop by their wine shop too!

Visit Arroyo Seco

Arroyo Seco is a small, whimsical village nestled between Taos and Taos Ski Valley. It is bohemian-vibey with a handful of great spots to eat and shop. Everyone is always on the hunt for authenticity, and Arroyo Seco is it. Definitely stop here to check out a few galleries and boutiques. Arroyo Seco is small but so charming. We ate at Sol Food Market/Café many times on our visit. Love it!

Grab a Casual Dinner at Guadalajara Grill

I couldn’t get enough of the red chili sauce. Guadalajara Grill was perfect—casual, quick, and offering LARGE portions. The counter service and extensive menu made it an easy choice. After a long day of biking and hiking, the food hit the spot. I went for a burrito and loved the help-yourself jalapeños.

Look at that red sauce!

Taos Burrito

Let me emphasize that if there's one suggestion you must not overlook, it's Taos! Even if you choose not to heed any of my other tips, be sure to explore Taos (and not only for winter skiing).

It's an unforgettable experience that will linger in your dreams.
