Nestled along the quaint coastline of Maine, Portland draws travelers in with its charming streets, maritime history, and amazing seafood. With its mix of historical sites, yummy restaurants, and scenic beauty, spending 24 hours in this coastal gem promises an unforgettable experience.
I recently spent a few days in Maine but unfortunately, only got to spend 24 hours in Portland. Even though my time was short, I grew to love this charming city and had a fantastic time. If you find yourself in the same situation with only a short time to devote to this city, take a look at a few of my recommendations.
Lunch at Luke's Lobster:
No visit to Maine is complete without indulging in fresh seafood, and Luke's Lobster is the place to be. Located in the heart of Portland, this seafood shack offers an authentic taste of the Atlantic with its succulent lobster rolls, crab rolls, and shrimp rolls. Enjoy your meal in a casual, nautical-themed setting that overlooks the water. Luke's may look like a tourist trap, but the food is top-notch. Also props to their locally-sourced menu.
Explore the Eastern Cemetery
Maybe strange, but I love visiting old cemeteries. If that's you too, definitely stroll through history at the Eastern Cemetery. Established in 1668, this historic burial ground is a fascinating place to learn about Portland's past. The cemetery's serene atmosphere is perfect for quiet contemplation amidst the city bustle.
Pastries at the Standard Baking Co:
If you read my blog, you know I LOVE pastries. Bread, get in my mouth.
Get here early because there WILL be a line! Indulge in an array of pastries, from buttery croissants to flaky fruit tarts. There's a reason this bakery is renowned. Pair your pastry with a freshly brewed cup of coffee for the perfect afternoon pick-me-up.
Ice Cream at Beal's Ice Cream:
As the day starts to warm up, head over to Beal's Ice Cream for a refreshing treat. This family-owned ice cream parlor has been delighting locals and visitors for generations. With lots of flavors ranging from German chocolate cake (my favorite) to unique Maine blueberry, a scoop at Beal's is hard to resist.
Walk the Eastern Promenade Trail:
For some natural beauty, definitely go for a morning walk along the Eastern Promenade Trail. This scenic trail offers panoramic vistas of Casco Bay and its islands, making it an ideal spot to relax, nap, read, or picnic.
Andrew and I woke up early to enjoy this walk in the cool breeze. It was so peaceful and calm. I'm jealous of those who live in Portland and can incorporate this trail into their daily routine.
Cocktails (and Hotdogs) at Room for Improvement:
Martinis and hotdogs? Yes, please! My favorite concept! This low-lit, quirky yet stylish bar offers a playful twist on traditional cocktails and a small selection of hotdogs if you want to munch. We sat outside to people-watch -- it was the perfect way to round off the day in Portland.
Portland, Maine, is a city that effortlessly combines history, culture, and culinary excellence. From savoring lobster rolls to exploring historic cemeteries, and indulging in drinks and pastries, a day in Portland is the city for a perfect vacation.
What a beautiful place. I can't wait to go back!
